Maghera is a historical village nestled at the foot of the Mourne Mountains in County Down. Within the village boundary is a prehistorical monastery founded by St. Domangard / St. Donard established in the early Christian period circa 500 AD. He lived as a hermit on Slieve Donard, a nearby mountain that is named after him.
The village has approximately 95 houses with a population of approximately 315 people. It also has a fantastic pub "The Maghera Inn" and primary school "St.Josephs Carnacaville."
The Maghera Community Group has been reformed in 2021 following a hiatus of a number of years. We intend to tackle a number of issues including:
- Regular Village upkeep days
- Explore options relating to traffic calming and vehicle activated speed signs
- Upgrades to existing facilities
- Updated signage
- Safe walking routes
- Explore options for a Maghera "Greenway" to incorporate the historical locations in the vicinity
